Project
“Radiation monitoring of the children in the regions of Belarus suffered from Chernobyl catastrophe and their radiation protection through the use of pectin preparations”
Republic of Belarus - Institute of Radiation Safety “Belrad”
As a result of the catastrophe at the Chernobyl NPP 23% of the territory of Belarus was contaminated with long-lived radionuclides of 137Cs, 90Sr, 249Pu etc. 1840951 persons live on the territories contaminated with the 137Cs higher than 37 kBq/m2 in 3221 settlements of Gomel, Mogilyov, Brest, Minsk and Grodno regions, 483369 of them are children and teenagers. In Chernobyl zone there are 811 pre-school establishments for children, 911 secondary schools, 19 boarding schools, 78 vocational schools, 84 technical schools and colleges, 40 higher educational establishments.
During implementing this project it is expected to make the whole checkup of the children on the SHR and if they have more than 15 Bq/kg - the pectin prophylaxis.
The risk category consists of the children from 811 pre-school establishments for children, the pupils from 930 secondary schools and in technical schools and higher educational establishments from the teenagers who have lived in Chernobyl zone of Belarus before beginning to study. The children are checked up in the mobile laboratories SHR, the internal 137Cs concentration is determined. During 20-30 days the children take pectins in kindergartens, schools, educational establishments. In a month after taking pectins the second SHR-checkup of the 137Cs concentration in children’s organism takes place.
The experience of the Institute “Belrad” shows that the usage of pectins 3-4 times a year decreases the annual dose in 2-3 times.
Totally from 500.000 children and teenagers 375.755 persons should be checked up on the SHR.
Budget estimates
I. Organizing of mobile radiological laboratories with the SHR
5 spectrometers SHR 5 x 15 000 $ US = 75 000 $ US
