Assessment of the effectiveness of removing
radionuclides from children’s organism with the help
of the preparation “Vitapect”

1. Project Aim
The project is provided for carrying out the “blind” tests using the preparations “Vitapect” and “Placebo”. The aim of the tests is an assessment of the effectiveness of radiation protection of children of the Chernobyl region of Belarus with the help of the preparation “Vitapect” and a showing of this effectiveness to the population. It is recommended to do the works under this project in the zones with a different contamination density of the territory, with different levels of doses of internal and external radiation, with different levels of contamination of foodstuffs, with a different level of the accumulation of radionuclides in children’s organism. For carrying out the researches 12 place are suggested.
Svetilovichi of Vetka district;
Polesye of Chechersk district;
Yurkevichi of Zhitkovichi district;

Turov of Zhitkovichi district;
Yurovichi of Kalinkovichi district;
Khrakovichi of Bragin district;
Komarin of Bragin district;
Skorodnoye of Yelsk district;
Dyatlovichi of Luninets district;
Kommunar of Buda-Koshelyovo district;
Korma of Dobrush district.
It is suggested to carry out the researches in places of the constant residence of children using a traditional menu. The places of researches will be schools in the places mentioned above.
2. Work Scheme
Before starting the measurements it is expected to hold a seminar where 2 persons from every school will present. The gist of the project should be explained the school representatives at the seminar. They will be acquainted with methods of researches, provided with teaching aids on radiation protection, brochures in which basic aims and tasks of the project as well as basic measures of radiation protection open to every inhabitant will be written.
When being checked up on the spectrometer of human internal radiation “SKRINNER-3M” (SHR) the children will be examined by the cardiologist and the eye doctor, the eye doctor will examine the children during each of six checkups.
The research will be made according the following scheme: the first measurement on the SHR of all children from this or that school – selecting two groups (A and B) 40 persons each (children who was born in 1990-1994) – the children from the group A will receive the preparation “Vitapect” during 24 days, the children from the group B will receive the preparation “Placebo” during 24 days – the second SHR-checkup, the children from both groups A and B will be checked up – the group will trade places that means the children who have taken “Vitapect” will take “Placebo”, the children have taken “Placebo” will take “Vitapect” – the third SHR-checkup. These actions will take place in autumn. According the same scheme the tests will be made in spring.
So the children will be checked up on the SHR six times during the research period.
Totally it is expected to measure 2,930 children from schools of 12 places.
Total number of measurements under the project:
The first measurement (autumn) – 2,930.
The second measurement – 12 schools*80 persons = 960.
The third measurement – 12 schools*80 persons = 960.
The fourth measurements (spring) – 2,930.
The fifth measurement – 12 schools*80 persons = 960.
The sixth measurement – 12 schools*80 persons = 960.
Total: 9,700 measurements
The peculiarity of testing lie in a fact that neither the project leader, the specialists implementing the tests nor the teachers and children will know which preparation this or that child tales. The statistical data reduction will be also blind that means first of all the level of changing of the radionuclide concentration in each child’s organism will be determined and only after it will be determined if the child refers to the group A or B.
Parents’ permission must be in written form. Each person has a right to stop participating in the “Test”.
The pectin preparation and the preparation Placebo are made in the form of powder with a fruit flavor not to be defined. Both preparations are prepared as a drink and taken by the children under nurse’s and parents’ supervision.
All the packages will be filled with one of the preparation, each package will be marked with the number the child has.
After finishing taking preparations (24 days) the children will be measured on the SHR for the second time and the received data for each child will be written in a general register. The envelopes with indications of the type of the preparation for each child sealed earlier after the first measurement will be opened. After determining who of the children have taken Vitapect or Placebo the statistical data processing in groups of children A and B will be made.
In case of an undesirable disease requiring to stop taking the preparation the envelope with the adequate number of the child can be opened. The protocol with reasons of stopping taking the preparations will be made for each child who will stop participating in the program
The children will be weighted before starting and after finishing taking each preparation.
In case of absence of children in the school the nurse will reflect this in the register and will also take into account complaints and doctor’s visits caused by undesirable diseases. The subjective aspects how the child feels taking the preparation, will be also noted.
After finishing the tests it is supposed to hold the final seminar where the results of the reasearch will be summed up and the school representatives and mass media will present.
It is supposed to place the result of the researches on the web-site that will be created before starting researches.
It is expected to make the researches in two stages: in autumn (September-November) and in spring (March-May).

The daily norm of the preparations “Vitapect” and “Placebo” will be given to the children two times a day, 5 grams each time.
4. Characteristic of places
Svetilovichi – a density of contamination 15-40 Ci/km2, a number of people – 541, an annual dose of external radiation- 3.0 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 1.9 mSv/year, of total radiation – 4.9 mSv/year.
In January-February 2000 in Svetilovichi the Institute of Radiation Safety made a checkup of the children for determining the radionuclide concentration in their organisms. As a result the following data was received. 172 persons was checked up. All children had the accumulations which were higher than 15 Bq/kg, a big number of the children had the accumulations higher than 100 Bq/kg. Maximal values of the 137Cs concentration of the children made 318.4 Bq/kg, 428.4 Bq/kg, 602.3 Bq/kg.
In Svetilovichi there is a local centre of radiation control of foodstuffs (LCRC). According to the data in 2000 149 probes of foodstuffs were analysed in order to determine the 137Cs concentration in them. In 46 probes (31%) the 137Cs concentration exceeded the permissible levels. Among the products with the excess of the 137Cs concentration there are fresh mushrooms (2,885; 2,589 Bq/kg), beef (823 Bq/kg), milk (253; 233; 173 Bq/kg).
Polesye - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 590, an annual dose of external radiation- 1.2 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.7 mSv/year, of total radiation – 1.9 mSv/year.
In Polesye there is a school-kindergarten. There are 150 pupils in the schools, and 30 children in the kindergarten. The director of the school is Kurochkin Victor Vasilyevich, the head of studies – Shelyuto Valentina Petrovna, tel. (02332) 2-33-99.
In 1998-2000 in Polesye the Institute of Radiation Safety conducted the radiation monitoring of foodstuffs and measured the 137Cs concentration in children’s organisms. Maximal values of the 137Cs concentration in mushrooms made several hundreds Bq/kg, in jam and compote from wild berries – 1,200-2,000 Bq/kg, maximal levels of the accumulation of radionuclides of children made 1,500 and 2,200 Bq/kg. The level of g -phone in places of picking up mushrooms and berries achieves 900 microroentgen in hour. According to the data from the LCRC which functions in the Polesye secondary school in 2000 in 11 case (19%) from 59 analyses of the probes of foodstuffs for determining the 137Cs concentration the excess of the permissible levels was registered (milk – 207; 137 Bq/kg, fresh mushrooms – 69,752 Bq/kg, dried mushrooms – 35,650 Bq/kg).
Yurkevichi - a density of contamination less than 1 Ci/km2, a number of people – 301, an annual dose of external radiation – 0.1 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.4 mSv/year, of total radiation – 0.5 mSv/year.
In Yurkevichi there is a secondary school. There are 150 pupils in the schools. The director of the school is G.B. Pantyuk, the chairwoman of the local soviets Shpakevich Yelena Ivanovna, tel. (02353) 2-25-74.
According to the data of the LCRC that functions in Yurkevichi secondary school, in 2000 344 analyses of the probes of foodstuffs for determining the 137Cs concentration were made. In 77 cases (24%) the excess of the permissible levels was registered. Among the products contaminated with 137Cs higher than the permissible levels are there are milk (1,371; 126; 122; 376 Bq/kg), cottage cheese (178 Bq/kg), fresh mushrooms (6,240 Bq/kg), dried mushrooms (3,500 Bq/kg). In spite of the fact that Yurkevichi is situated in the zone with the density of contamination of the territory less than 1 Ci/km2 the local foodstuffs are poorly contaminated with 137Cs. It may be explained with the fact that around the village there are no meadows and the cattle eat the grass in neighboring forests. The inhabitants use many berries and mushrooms from the forest.
In September – October of 2000 the Insitute of Radiation Safety conducted the radiation monitoring of and children. Just all children have the accumulations more th.an 15 Bq/kg. Maximal values of the concentration of cesium by children make 101-164 Bq/kg. When being measured for the second time after the pectin prophylaxis the decrease made 24%.
Lenin - a density of contamination – 1.5 Ci/km2, a number of people – 881, an annual dose of external radiation- 0.4 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 1.5 mSv/year, of total radiation – 1.9 mSv/year.

99% of children have the accumulation more than 20 Bq/kg having maximal values 200-557 Bq/kg. After carrying out the pectin prophylaxis there was a 36 % decrease of the accumulation. According to the data of the regional station of hygiene and epidemiology the excesses of the 137Cs concentration are constantly registered in milk, mushrooms, bilberries, potatoes, fish (not far from there is a river Sluch and fishing is a traditional kind of activity for many inhabitants).
Turov – a small town in Zhitkovichi district. It was not included in a Dose Catalogue of 1992. Population – 3,000 inhabitants.
There are two secondary schools in Turov. It is expected to make the researches in the secondary school No. 2. A number of pupils –230. The director of the school – Doroshko Nikolay Dmitriyevich, tel. (02353) 75-2-35.
It is expected to use in a work the chief doctor of the hospital of the town Turov – Sergeychik Irina Alexandrovna, tel (02353) 75-1-70.
In September – October of 2000 the Insitute of Radiation Safety conducted the radiation monitoring of school children of the Turov secondary school No 2. 26 of 230 children checked up in September had not got radionuclides in their organisms. Some children had the accumulations more than 100 Bq/kg. Maximal value made 141 Bq/kg at the same time. In spite of the fact that Turov is considered to be a “clean” district, the children have got the big accumulations. It is possibly connected with the use of mushrooms which are collected by the local inhabitants in the neighboring Lelchtsy district. All mushrooms excess the permissible levels of the 137Cs concentration there. Apart from that fish from the Pripyat river (the town Turov is situated on it) can be a source of getting 137Cs to the local inhabitants’ organisms.
Yurovichi - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 932, an annual dose of external radiation- 0.5 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.2 mSv/year, of total radiation – 0.7 mSv/year.
In Yurovichi secondary school there are about 200 pupils. The director of the school T.I.Veko.
The radiation control of foodstuffs from Yurovichi was organized in the LCRC Shareyki of the local Soviet Yurovichi. In 2000 in the LCRC 349 analyses of the probes of foodstuffs were made.
In 56 cases (16%) the 137Cs concentration exceeded the permissible levels. Among the products with the excess of the 137Cs concentration there are milk (724; 108; 341; 310 Bq/kg), dried mushrooms (15,360; 12,350 Bq/kg), fresh mushrooms (2,100 Bq/kg).
In April-May 2001 the Institute of Radiation Safety conducted the radiation monitoring of and children. All children have the accumulations more than 20 Bq/kg with maximal values from 100 up to 230 Bq/kg. It goes without saying the sources of getting 137Cs into the local inhabitants organism are milk and forest products.
Kommunar - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 2,300, an annual dose of external radiation- 1.0 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.3 mSv/year, of total radiation – 1.3 mSv/year.
In Kommunar secondary school there are more than 400 pupils.
In February-March 2001 the Institute of Radiation Safety conducted the radiation monitoring of and children. 75% of children have the accumulations more than 20 Bq/kg with maximal values up to 100 Bq/kg.
Skorodnoye - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 750, an annual dose of external radiation- 0.8 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 2.6 mSv/year, of total radiation – 3.4 mSv/year.
The secondary school is located in the village Skorodnoye. In Skorodnoye secondary school there are more than 200 pupils. The director of the school – Klepkov Vassily Yegorovich, tel. (02354) 3-83-68.
The excesses of levels of the concentration of cesium in foodstuffs (milk, berries, beef) are registered in Skorodnoye regularly. Some years the activity of milk made 1,200 Bq/l. 95% of children have the accumulations more than 20 Bq/kg with maximal values from 600 Bq/kg up to 1,600 Bq/kg.
Korma - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 1,370, an annual dose of external radiation- 1.1 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.5 mSv/year, of total radiation – 1.6 mSv/year.
In Korma secondary school there are more than 200 pupils.
The radiation monitoring of foodstuffs and children was not conducted by the Institute of Radiation Safety “Belrad” there.
Dyatlovichi - a density of contamination 1-5 Ci/km2, a number of people – 2,600, an annual dose of external radiation- 0.3 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.7 mSv/year, of total radiation – 1.0 mSv/year.
In Dyatlovichi secondary school there are 460 pupils. The director of the school – Todorsky Ivan Fyodorovich, tel. (01647) 92-2-42.
The excesses of levels of the concentration of cesium in fodder and milk are registered in Dyatlovichi regularly. 90% of children have the accumulations more than 20 Bq/kg with maximal values from up to 150 Bq/kg.
Khrakovichi - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 700, an annual dose of external radiation- 0.3 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.4 mSv/year, of total radiation – 0.7 mSv/year.
In Khrakovichi secondary school there are about 200 pupils. The director of the school – Maltseva Natalya Mikhaylovna, tel. (02344) 2-52-46.
90% of children have the accumulations more 20 Bq/kg with maximal values from up to 200 Bq/kg.
The excesses of levels of the concentration of cesium in foodstuffs (milk, pork, dried and fresh mushrooms) are registered in Khrakovichi regularly. According to the data dated to 2000 199 probes of foodstuffs were selected, 48 (24% of them) – with the excess of the permissible levels. Pork – 984 Bq/kg, fresh mushrooms – 37,000 Bq/kg, dried mushrooms – 3,721 Bq/kg.
Komarin - a density of contamination 5-15 Ci/km2, a number of people – 2,700, an annual dose of external radiation- 0.4 mSv/year, of internal radiation – 0.3 mSv/year, of total radiation – 0.7 mSv/year.
In Komarin secondary school there are more than 400 pupils.
The village Komarin is located in 31 km from the Chernobyl NPP. The excesses of levels of the concentration of cesium in foodstuffs are registered in Komarin regularly. The maximal activity of milk was registered in 1997 and made 5,545 Bq/l. According to the data dated to 2000 365 probes of foodstuffs were selected, 46 (13% of them) – with the excess of the permissible levels. Beef –1,736 Bq/kg, fresh mushrooms – 5,740 Bq/kg, dried mushrooms – 16,159 Bq/kg, fish – 2,374 Bq/kg. 90% of children have the accumulations more than 20 Bq/kg with maximal values from up to 400 Bq/kg.
